(Photo by ORTN &#8211; T\u00e9l\u00e9 Sahel \/ AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruled by a military junta since July 2023, Niger is battling heightened insecurity amid repeated attacks by armed groups, several affiliated to Al-Qaeda or Islamic State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0The area of Torodi (in the southwest) has experienced several security incidents in recent days,\u00a0\u00bb stated the latest army operations bulletin on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 14, a military detachment came under fire \u00ab\u00a0from criminal armed groups\u00a0\u00bb on a road in the area, with six attackers killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The army said one soldier was lightly wounded while troops seized motorcycles and weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 6 April, a \u00ab\u00a0criminal armed group\u00a0\u00bb attacked a neighbourhood and a police station in the town of Makalondi, the army said, but \u00ab\u00a0did not cause casualties\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four days earlier, minibuses were also attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0The events logged in Makalondi have caused a movement of local populations to other localities in the region,\u00a0\u00bb the army said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, to \u00ab\u00a0reassure the population,\u00a0\u00bb the military had \u00ab\u00a0immediately reinforced its presence\u00a0\u00bb locally to facilitate \u00ab\u00a0the gradual return of the displaced populations\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Niamey, but just a handful of kilometres from the border, Makalondi has been targeted since 2018 by Islamist groups, despite the massive deployment of anti-jihadist forces reinforced by a state of emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the army said it had arrested a fortnight ago \u00ab\u00a0an influential member\u00a0\u00bb of the Salafist jihadist JNIM group, without elaborating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mali and Burkina Faso, like Niger under military regimes, have similarly suffered regular jihadist attacks in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three neighbours recently grouped together in an Alliance of Sahel States and created a unified force to fight jihadist groups in a landlocked space of some 2.8 million square kilometres (1.1 million square miles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Our people expect results &#8230; We have a historic duty to respond to this legitimate aspiration (to counter attacks) and establishing this unified force must be the manifestation of our categorical refusal to depend on external support,\u00a0\u00bb Burkinabe chief of staff General Moussa Diallo told a meeting in his homeland earlier this week attended by counterparts from Mali and Niger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a9 Agence France-Presse<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Niamey,\u00a0Niger \u2013 Niger beefed up its troops&rsquo; presence on the border with neighbouring Burkina Faso to counter a perceived \u00ab\u00a0terror threat\u00a0\u00bb liable to force local people from their homes, a security source told AFP on Thursday.
