{"id":17485,"date":"2025-03-01T02:08:45","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T02:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africadailyreport.com\/2025\/03\/01\/s-sudan-leaders-fuelling-violence-and-instability-un\/"},"modified":"2025-03-01T02:10:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T02:10:12","slug":"s-sudan-leaders-fuelling-violence-and-instability-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africadailyreport.com\/fr\/2025\/03\/01\/s-sudan-leaders-fuelling-violence-and-instability-un\/","title":{"rendered":"S.Sudan leaders fuelling violence and instability: UN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-juba-south-south-sudan-s-leaders-are-fuelling-violence-and-instability-in-the-young-nation-a-critical-united-nations-report-said-friday\">Juba,\u00a0South &#8211; South Sudan&rsquo;s leaders are fuelling violence and instability in the young nation, a critical United Nations report said Friday.<\/h2>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio  is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper video-seo-youtube-embed-wrapper\"><div class=\"video-seo-youtube-player\" data-id=\"ztYoGnJrO4k\"><\/div><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The oil-rich but impoverished country, which achieved independence in 2011, is plagued by frequent clashes and political infighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clashes broke out earlier this month in two regions, killing civilians and wounding a peacekeeper, with Human Rights Watch recently noting an \u00ab\u00a0alarming surge of violence\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 24-page UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan report &#8212; which draws from 2024 independent UN investigations, meetings with local officials, open-source material and forensic information &#8212; \u00ab\u00a0reveals how political and military elites continue to fuel violence and instability\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yasmin Sooka, who chairs the commission, condemned leaders who \u00ab\u00a0continue their violent contestations across the country and are abjectly failing the people of South Sudan\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission&rsquo;s investigation identified similar patterns of \u00ab\u00a0gross violations\u00a0\u00bb in 2024, \u00ab\u00a0often implicating the same public and military offices\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Sexual violence persists both in and outside conflicts, even as senior officials continue to endorse extrajudicial killings, and the forced recruitment and abduction of boys and girls into combat or sexual slavery continue unchecked,\u00a0\u00bb she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report found conflict-related sexual violence remained \u00ab\u00a0systemic, brutal and widespread\u00a0\u00bb with leaders failing to protect the country&rsquo;s next generation, Sooka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0These acts constitute grave violations of international law, yet the perpetrators continue to operate with impunity.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also noted that despite South Sudan&rsquo;s government revenue between 2022-2024 being estimated at $3.5 billion, there had been no progress on reconstructing schools, hospitals or courts, with civil servants remaining unpaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Financing essential services and rule of law institutions requires an end to the corruption,\u00a0\u00bb said Carlos Castresana Fernandez, a member of the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also touched on the 2018 transition agreement, which ended the five-year civil war between President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September last year, the government announced another two-year delay of polls, blaming a lack of funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Without addressing this systemic looting, no peace agreement will ever translate into meaningful change,\u00a0\u00bb Fernandez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a9 Agence France-Presse<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Juba,\u00a0South &#8211; South Sudan&rsquo;s leaders are fuelling violence and instability in the young nation, a critical United Nations report said Friday.
